History of Gallatin, Tennessee
Gallatin was surveyed in 1803, the same year Andrew Jackson purchased land in the town and the first courthouse and jail were built. Jackson also founded the city's first general store. During the Civil War, Union forces captured Gallatin in February 1862, followed by General John Hunt Morgan's recapture that July. Confederate forces eventually fell back to Chattanooga, and Gallatin remained under occupational forces until the war's end.
After the war the city returned to steady agricultural growth. Industrialization in the mid-twentieth century shifted the economy, and by 1970 fewer than half of Sumner County residents were classified as rural. Gallatin today is one of the fastest-growing cities in Tennessee — the population nearly doubled between 2000 and the mid-2020s — and one of the most consistently sought-after communities in the greater Nashville area for its combination of lake access, community character, and proximity to Hendersonville and Nashville.
